About Cyprus

Discover Cyprus: Culture & Lifestyle

Cyprus combines Mediterranean island life with a very welcoming, community-driven culture. English is widely spoken, and South African families often comment on how quickly they feel “at home” on the island. Daily life is relaxed but well-organised, with clean public spaces, safe streets and a strong café and outdoor culture.

With beautiful beaches, a warm climate, mountain villages and wine routes, Cyprus offers a lifestyle that feels familiar to many South Africans – but with European infrastructure and low violent-crime levels. Weekends can move easily from the sea to the mountains, with hiking, cycling and watersports all within short driving distance.

Living costs remain reasonable compared to many EU countries, and there is a wide choice of restaurants, shopping centres, private gyms and sports clubs. For families, the “small but complete” nature of the island means less time in traffic and more time together.

About Cyprus

Business and Career Opportunities

Cyprus has a modern, service-based economy with strong sectors in financial and professional services, shipping, IT, tourism and real estate. For South Africans, it can serve as a practical EU platform: you may live in Cyprus, be a shareholder or director in local companies, and use the country’s wide network of double-tax treaties – including with South Africa – to structure international business activity efficiently.

Cyprus offers an attractive tax environment for both individuals and companies, with no tax on most overseas dividends for qualifying non-dom individuals, no wealth or inheritance tax, and a competitive corporate tax rate that remains low by EU standards. At the same time, the island is politically stable, part of the EU and eurozone, and uses English extensively in business, law and accounting – making it significantly easier for South Africans to operate than in many other European jurisdictions.

Cyprus residency for South Africans

Cyprus is not just a beautiful island – it is also one of the most practical EU “Plan B” options for South African families. By investing at least €300,000 (plus VAT) in qualifying real estate and demonstrating a minimum annual income, you can obtain a Cyprus Permanent Residence Permit (PRP) for yourself, your spouse and dependent children. The permit is processed in a few months, is valid for life, and only requires that you and your family visit Cyprus at least once every two years.

Children included in the PRP keep their status as long as they are minors. From 18 to 25 they can usually remain as dependants if they are unmarried, full-time tertiary students and financially dependent on their parents. They have access to Cyprus’ public education and public health systems, and after completing their studies they can apply for their own immigration permit, which remains valid even after age 25. This makes Cyprus particularly attractive for South Africans who want to secure their children’s future in Europe.

Cyprus permanent residency does not automatically give visa-free access to the Schengen Area. However, PRP holders can apply for Schengen visas (often one-year, multiple-entry visas) at European embassies in Nicosia. In practice, once you are a resident with a stable footprint in Cyprus, it generally becomes easier to manage Schengen travel compared to applying only from South Africa.

For many South Africans, Cyprus also offers potential tax efficiencies when combined with professional advice: for example, the possibility of living in a lower-tax EU jurisdiction, receiving foreign investment income under the non-dom regime, and building an international business or retirement structure outside the rand. Every situation is different, so we work with your advisors to ensure the Cyprus plan fits your South African tax and estate planning.
